As I sat home last weekend on a cold April night with a fire burning in the fireplace, I decided I needed to add a little summer to my life. Making surf wax soy candles seemed like the perfect way to bridge the gap between (a cold) Spring and Summer. The smell of surf wax feels like home and I wanted a way to bring that scent to my everyday life.

DIY Surf Wax Soy Candle
Materials:
Surf Wax (picked up from my local surf shop)
Soy Wax (I choose to use Soy flakes I got from Michaels Craft Store, because flakes burn quicker)
Candle wicks (also purchased at Michaels)
Double boiler
Mason Jars and Lids
Optional: A bottle of wine (I figured a Grapefruit Rose would have my cold April night feeling like a warm summer day.
Step One:
I have tried to make entirely surf wax candles in the past and they wouldn't burn at all, so when making them this time I decided to combine surf wax and soy wax.
I used a 3:1 ratio of soy wax to surf wax.
Begin boiling the surf wax in a double burner and once it is almost fully melted add soy flakes.
Step Two:
Pour the wax into your mason jars, while holding the wick in place (for me, this was a two person job that required the help of my mom).

Step Three:
Hold the wick in place using whatever you have handy. We found some chopsticks in our draw and they worked perfectly. But you also could wrap the wick around a pen, knife, etc.
Step Four:
Wait for the wax to settle. I waited over night and then burned the candle the next morning. While I waited for my candles to settle. I cut the surf wax box and hot glued the logo to the mason jar lid.
Step Five:
Light your candle and take a mini vacation to the beach with the scent of surf wax.

Final Thoughts:
The candles look absolutely adorable, and I love the idea of using surf wax, however surf wax doesn't quite burn right. The next time I make candles I am going to stick to only using soy wax.
